Eyes on the World

What is LASIK?

LASIK is a laser eye surgery intended to reduce a person's dependency on his glasses or contact lenses. LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, at the front of the eye, using excimer laser. Basically, it involves lifting a superficial flap from the cornea, which is the transparent tissue in front of the colored iris and pupil. An extraprecision laser is then applied to the undersurface of the flap to modify the cornea exactly according to your degree of error. The flap is then reposited in place with no need to sutures. Applying the laser beam under the flap offers an excellent opportunity to regain comfortable good vision few hours after the procedure. In recent years, the wavefront technology has been successfully used to the big advantage of a much better quality visual outcome in eyes with higher order aberrations.

LASIK Steps

Outside the laser room, An assistant will put an eye drop for you, after which you will be guided to the laser room where you will be asked to lie comfortably on the laser bed.

Step 1

Eye drops are again applied to your eye. Dr Khalil will then insert a holder under your eyelids that will ensure your eye remains open during the procedure.

Step 2

Now a flap is created in your cornea. This is done with a mechanical device called a microkeratome after increasing the pressure inside the eye by a special apparatus in order to make a regular beautiful flap. During these 15-20 seconds, your perception of light will be dimmed significantly. Nowadays, some physicians use a different laser to create the flap instead of the microkeratome with no much proven difference yet. The flap is in average only 90-160 microns thick  which is the thickness of a fingernail. Dr Khalil then carefully folds the flap away in order to expose the corneal tissue underneath called the stroma.

Step 3
Next, Dr Khalil will ask you to fixate on a light inside the laser machine. Then the laser light is applied and reshapes your corneal surface.  In the brief period while the
laser is running, you hear a buzzing sound and you may realize a smell similar to burning hair.

Step 4
When the laser application is complete, Dr Khalil replaces the lasik flap in its original position, where it completely adheres.
