| The Hermitage
is one of the great museums of the world, which I had not
seen yet. That is why after an excellent scientific meeting
at the Fyodorov Eye Institute in Moscow, to which I was
invited to speak by Prof Boris Malyugin; chief of the
department of cataract and impplant surgery there, I decided
to fly to the city of St Petersburg (leningrad) home to the
infamous museum. What happened is that my one and half day
there were a Monday when the museum is usually closed, and
in the following day, long cues did not help me to make it
in either!
BUT, I was very
much rewarded by a most beautiful city!!! Among great cities
in the world, St Petersburg stands out very imminently.
While there, I can easily say that it is the most beautiful
city I have visited, and even now, many months after that
visit, I keep most of the same opinion; maybe because of the
very homogenous artisticarchitecture, maybe because of the
many canals and rivers flowing, maybe because of the
extensive renovations and the very bright elegant appearance
of the buildings and their full lights up at night , maybe
because of the clear bulue sky which prevailed in one day
and the sudden snowfall at that same night marking the
beginning of Russian winter, and covering everythng in few
hours time, maybe because of the very confortable feeling
coming to the soull when walking in the parks intermingled
with the widely spaced architecture like that at the
Admiralty and the perfect Palace square, maybe I did not
have much chance to experience other aspects of the city,
but architecture, urban design, and watching people
activities from outside. But isn't that the purpose of
architecture and all arts, to affect the human soul
positively. I leave you now with some of the pictures, and
welcome to any comments by
